The Tradition of International Law in Central and Eastern Europe
What the yearbook is
Whereas a journal primarily offers a forum for ongoing scholarly discourse, a yearbook serves a more archival and interpretive function.
It is a reflective undertaking, designed to provide a comprehensive annual account of a state’s involvement with the international legal order.
RYIEL will be designed as an extensive annual synopsis, systematically organized into separate recurring sections that ensure consistency and academic utility for readers.
What it aims to achieve
The creation of the RYIEL would mark an important stage in the evolution of Romanian legal scholarship by offering an authoritative reference work that documents, examines, and contextualizes the intersection between international and EU law in the Romanian context and, by extension, the wider Eastern European region.
Furthermore, the yearbook will emphasise a rationalist and humanist approach to international law – emphasis on values, correlation of the legal dimension with the moral and philosophical – reflection on the ethical foundations of international and European law, interdisciplinarity – dialogue between law, philosophy, political science and international relations.
How it works
Articles and Essays
The yearbook’s main academic component, featuring peer-reviewed, in-depth studies on conceptual and thematic issues at the junction of international and European law, addressing the specificities of the Eastern European context in particular. The editorial board will give priority to articles of enduring scholarly relevance over those limited to immediate developments.
Romanian State Practice in International and European Law
A detailed and methodical account of Romania’s official legal position and conduct in relation to international and European law. Contributions will be invited from governmental authorities, practitioners, and academics.
Romanian Jurisprudence on International and European Law
Critical analyses and annotated summaries of significant judgments delivered by the Romanian judiciary concerning the interpretation or application of international and EU law. It aims to present the manner in which global and regional legal norms are received within the domestic legal system.
Book Reviews and Colloquia
Reviews of significant recent works in international and European law, and reports from major academic events and conferences held in Romania. Through this, the RYIEL aims to serve as a hub for regional legal scholarship.
How RYIEL engages with scholars
Contributions will be welcomed from Romanian as well as international scholars. For the state-practice section, the Faculty also invites governmental authorities, practitioners, and academics.
English will serve as the primary language of publication. Articles and essays in French may also be accepted.
The RYIEL will operate primarily as a digital, open-access publication to promote global dissemination and accessibility.
The yearbook encourages the research of works belonging to authors from historically underrepresented geographical areas, especially, but not exclusively, those from Central and Eastern Europe. Citation is not exclusively restricted to international circulation languages.
For Volume 1, a proposal was an abstract sent to ryiel@e-uvt.ro. That call has closed. Proposals were due on 20 August 2026. The call records the length, the statement of originality, and those dates.
Standards
- Peer review
- All scholarly submissions in Part III will undergo a double-blind peer-review procedure.
- Language policy
- English will serve as the primary language of publication. Articles and essays in French may also be accepted.
- Editorial independence
- The yearbook will maintain complete editorial autonomy, with publication decisions based solely on academic merit.
- Open access
- The RYIEL will operate primarily as a digital, open-access publication to promote global dissemination and accessibility.
Inaugural conference

The European Society of International Law (ESIL) is pleased to support the inaugural conference of the Romanian Yearbook of International and European Law (RYIEL).
Call for papers, Volume 1
The proposal window for this call has closed.
The inaugural volume (2026) is devoted to The Tradition of International Law in Central and Eastern Europe. It seeks historical, doctrinal, comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, and their continuing relevance to contemporary international and European law. The call asked for original, unpublished contributions.
A proposal was an abstract of approximately 300–600 words, with the author’s statement of originality and that a manuscript was not under consideration elsewhere. A full manuscript was not required at that stage.
Proposals were due at ryiel@e-uvt.ro on 20 August 2026, end of day. Authors were to be informed of the selection by 10 September 2026.
A selected manuscript normally ranges between 7,500 and 11,000 words, including footnotes and excluding the abstract. It is sent as an anonymised file, with a separate title page (author, email, affiliation, and the title), a short CV, a short abstract, and a personal statement that the manuscript has not been published, submitted, or accepted elsewhere. Authors should consult and follow the RYIEL Style Sheet. In case of contradiction with the submission guidelines, the rules set in the calls for papers have priority.
